Top Fitness Trends for This New Year

The New Year is the time when many of us Resolve to improve our fitness, but we need to have fitness regimes that keep us hooked. We've asked Bradley Simmonds, Fitness guru and celebrity PT to tell us, what trends do we need to know about in 2017:

Personal touch

There are so many classes and exercise programmes around that knowing who to train effectively can be very confusing. Personal Trainers offer quality assurance and can adapt exercises to you, to make sure you don’t injure yourself through poor form, strain an already dodgy knee or push yourself too much trying to keep up with the person next to you!

Next year I think more people will make use of personal trainers as they want the guidance, quality of service and see really results for all their efforts. It’s also often great fun - I have a brilliant relationship with all my clients and having a great trainer to encourage and inject some energy can make all the difference to a session.

Social Fitness - taking the ‘work’ out of ‘workout’

The gym can be very intimidating, but you don’t have to do it alone. Fitness is becoming the new social scene thanks to apps like Fitssi that mean you can smile through the sweat and make some new workout buddies, all while getting fitter and healthier with a highly qualified exercise professional leading you through a specially designed, highly effective workout.

I think it is only a matter of time before all the different technologies available in the various devices will come together and create a more integrated and personal fitness experience involving adventures in online environments.

Let’s take it outside

Being outside not only boosts our ‘feel good’ hormone, but also increases our exposure to Vitamin D, which can improve energy levels and decrease stress.

Keep it simple, by going for a run and include your own circuits with burpees, star jumps and squats. You may even stumble across outdoor gyms, with more and more parks now equipped with fitness machines so you can get your all over body workout, sunshine or rain.

Functional Fitness

Rather than traditional ‘split’ training, in 2017 we’ll see much more functional fitness as people’s priorities shift from purely aesthetics to overall health and wellbeing. Functional fitness incorporates movements that work multiple joints across the whole body, and develops overall strength, mobility and aerobic ability - all needed for a fit and healthy body.
