Whether you’re at a house party or crammed into a busy pub on New Year’s Eve, as the clock strikes midnight and the annual kissathon starts, it can feel like everyone around you is celebrating the New Year with someone special.

However, there are millions of single people who are looking to meet their soulmate in 2016, or at least to find someone to kiss under the mistletoe before the festivities start again. So, it shouldn’t come as a great surprise to find out that New Year’s Day is the busiest day of the year for online dating websites, with thousands of new members joining on the big day.

If you’re new to online dating, then New Year’s Day is the best time to join – there will be lots of enthusiastic people who are all willing to get stuck into messaging straight away and there will be lots of existing members with renewed vigour who are keen to make a new start. Lucy from Muddy Matches gives her tips:

So how do you choose the dating website for you?
The best thing to do is to ask your friends about the websites that they’ve used, or failing that, search for websites that fit in with what you’re looking for. Make sure to also check reviews of various sites to see what other singles have said about their experiences.

How do I sign up?
Signing up is usually pretty easy, you just need to provide your name and email address to join most dating sites. From there, you’ll be asked to either write a profile straight away, or if the website matches people based on a psychological profile, you’ll be asked to fill in a questionnaire.

How do I write a dating profile?
Your dating profile should be a brief explanation of what makes you who you are. Think about what makes you happy and what makes you unique. Try to keep your profile upbeat and avoid meaningless clichés like ‘I like going out and staying in’. You can avoid this by being more specific and saying where you like to go out and what you enjoy doing in the comfort of your own home.

How do I select a photo for my dating profile?
Use a good, clear photograph of your face so that people know who they are talking to. If you use arty lighting, photo editing or a photo where you’re 100 metres from the camera, people will assume that you’re hiding something. A full-length photograph is also helpful, as it will enable people to see your figure. If you’re not too confident about showing off your figure, remember there will be someone who likes you just the way you are.

Now what?
Now you’ve got your profile sorted, you can search for people who you like the look of and send messages to them. Keep your messages short and friendly.

Good luck and we hope that 2016 will be your best dating year so far.
