Breaking a bad habit is simpler than you might think, says Dr Judson Brewer, a thought-leader in the field of habit-change and self-mastery – and the presenter of a new, hour-long “Masterclass” on “Breaking Bad Habits”, on Calm.com, the meditation app just named Apple’s iPhone App of the Year for 2017.

“There’s a real science behind self-mastery and it starts with understanding how our minds work”, says Dr Brewer, a world expert in mindfulness training for overcoming addictions.

“We all have bad habits that we find are impossible to break”, he adds. “It’s because the modern day is tapping into our very old evolutionarily conserved processes that were actually set up to help us remember where food is.”

Dr Judson Brewer is a professor and researcher on mindfulness at UMass Medical School, Yale and MIT and author of the new book, The Craving Mind: From Cigarettes To Smartphones To Love – Why We Get Hooked And How We Can Break Bad Habits (New Haven: Yale University Press, 2017).

His hour-long Calm Masterclass on Breaking Bad Habits is the first in a planned new monthly series of Calm Masterclasses, delivered by global experts on how Calm’s users can transform their lives in various ways.

It has three 20-minute sections or “chapters” on respectively:

  1. Awareness Of Habit Loops – made up of Trigger, Behaviour, Reward

Become aware of how we get caught up in unhealthy habit loops.

  1. Hacking Reward-Based Learning: Start to explore the outcomes, results and rewards that you’re getting from your habit and ask, ‘Is it worth it?’
  2. Rewards That Are More Rewarding: How to use mindfulness and meditation to step out of habit loops, change your behaviour and break bad habits.

“You're going to learn all sorts of things about how your mind works”, says Brewer. “And then you're going to learn about how to tap into your mind to hack that reward system, so you can take these old habits and all that energy from them and move that in a positive direction.”

“We can start to ask, ‘What do I get from this? What happens when I bring new awareness to my own experience?’”

This is a unique approach, he explains, because instead of just jumping to the behaviours and saying, ‘Oh, you should do this ... or that’, it starts with asking, ‘What is your mind like? What am I getting from these behaviours?’ And what does it feel like – what does the joy feel like – when I start to let go?”

Brewer, in short, hopes that his Calm Masterclass will help listeners break their own bad habits, start to hack into their natural, reward-based learning system and harness it for their own benefit.

“I don’t know how many of you have given up on overcoming bad habits, but for those of you who have, I say this: ‘Simply pay attention and ask this one question: What do I get from this?’ Keep doing them, but ask that question, ‘What do I get from this?’ And see what happens next.”
